BATTERY BACKED UP SYSTEMS

Grid - Tied & Off - Grid

Thames Solar Electric got its start in the solar business doing Off-Grid systems in 1996 in the Colorado mountains.  We installed 100 kw’s worth of battery backed systems during the 1999's in preparation for Y2K.  Each systems was 2 to 3 kw.  Ken and son Joe specialize in the installation, maintenance and repair of battery Grid-Tied and Off-Grid systems.

The Typical off grid system will have the following components

Inverters

Inverters are the hart of all PV systems. They convert DC to AC to supply usable power to the home. They also can be a charger, converting AC, from a generator or the grid, to DC to charge a batteries bank. Inverters can remote start a generator and monitors the heath of your battery bank. They also provide info on system performance.

In the 90's we installed the Trace (Zantrex) SW Series Inverters. We have extensive experience servicing these older inverters and have used replacements available.

For larger systems, Outback inverters can be stacked together to supply the power needs for larger loads.

In the early 2000's we switched over to the new Outback PS-2 Inverter system. A couple of years ago Outback introduced the Flexware line of equipment which is now the industry standard. We presently stock, sell, install and service Outback inverters and are very pleased with their performance.

Zantrex (previously Trace) has updated their inverter to the XPseries. This inverter would be a good choice when both being Grid Tied and having Generator back-up requirements

Charge controllers

The charge control main purpose is to protect the main batteries from being over charged buy the array. The Outback MX60 is a popular charge controller due to its ability to "Max Power Point tracking" allowing A high input voltage and a more efficient charging capability. The MX60 also support Equalizing and logging statistics of impute power from the array.

The charge control is limited in capacity, more than one charge controller  is need for larger systems.

Battery Storage

Our most commonly used battery is the L-16 scrubber battery. This battery is sold in high volume to industry so it is the most economically feasible. These batteries need maintenance such as adding water, equalizing regularly and possibly dealing with acid spills. These batteries must be vented to the outside to remove the hydrogen gas buildup when charging. Three out of four systems we are involved with will use this type of battery. We consider this battery the work horse of the industry.

Custom build battery box

Maintenance free batteries are also available. They don't need water to be added or need to be equalized. They do not vent hydrogen gas so venting is not necessary.

L-16 batteries

We make our own custom made battery boxes out of 2in angle steel. They can be made to mach any number and size of batteries. A vent fan is installed that vents the Hydrogen out of the box when battery gases.

Array

The array can use the same modules used with grid tied systems but each string is much shorter allowing for the lower voltage required for battery based systems.
